Uranium hydroxide/oxide deposits on uranyl reduction

We clarified the chemical state transformation of deposits following the reduction of uranyl ion (U$$^{rm VI}$$O$$_{2}$$$$^{2+}$$) from the results of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, impedance spectra and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. We propose the following deposition mechanism: (1) U$$^{rm IV}$$ is formed by the disproportionation of U$$^{rm V}$$. (2) U$$^{rm IV}$$ forms U$$^{rm IV}$$ hydroxide deposits, and (3) finally, the hydroxide deposits transform into U$$^{rm IV}$$ oxide, generally having a larger electrical resistance than the former.

Study of chemical etching conditions for alpha-particle detection and visualization using solid state nuclear track detectors

We evaluate radon/thoron and its progeny concentration using passive-type monitors using CR-39 plates. After exposure, it is necessary to do chemical etching for CR-39 plates. In the present study, we considered shortening of chemical etching time for CR-39 and enlargement of the track diameter (i.e. etch pit diameter) aiming for introduction of automatic counting system in the future. Optimum conditions were determined by changing solution concentration, solution temperature and etching time. As a result, the optimized conditions (concentration, temperature and etching time) were determined to be 8 M NaOH solution, 75 degrees Celsius and 10 hours. This result of etching time showed that the chemical etching was completed in less than half of conventional etching time. Furthermore, it was suggested that shorter etching time would be possible if we do not consider the enlargement of conventional track diameter.

New laser decontamination technique for radioactively contaminated metal surfaces using acid-bearing sodium silicate gel

A new laser decontamination method utilizing a gel made from a sodium silicate solution and an acid was developed for removing radioactive nuclide incorporated into a surface oxide layer on metal waste. Decontamination tests were carried out using both simulated contaminated samples and pipe specimens cut from the primary coolant system of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor. In the case of surface oxide layer consisting mainly of iron oxide, more than 99% of surface radioactivities were removed after two to three decontamination runs. In order to ascertain the role of laser irradiation on chemical reactions, chemical states of O and Fe in the oxide layer before and after decontamination were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the oxide layer was dissolved into the acid-containing gel, and the reaction was extensively promoted by the laser irradiation.

Replication of individual snow crystals for their subsequent chemical analysis using micro-PIXE

A snow crystal scavenges earozol particles and trasfer various elements in atomosphere through heterogenious nucleation. The snow has many complicated crystal shapes which results in difficulty in comparison of its environmental purification function directly with that of raindrops. The replica of individual snow crystal grain was prepared by their immobilization on the collodion film. The replica samples were analized by micro-PIXE at JAERI and PIXE st Kyoto university. The following results are obtained: (1) Size(circumscribed diameter) of individual snow crystal are in the range of 0.12-2.5mm, (2)snow crystal grows from hexagnal plate to dendritic sectored plate, (3) major elements captured by a snow crystal are Si,S,K,Ca,Fe,S, (4)there is relation between snow crystal size and captured-element masses. The result leads us to presume the chemical inner-structure and the elemental mixing state in/on single snow crystal.
